- Small images (under 1 MB) travel inside the message.
- Larger images, and video, audio and other files, are uploaded to your private Allternit Cloud storage when you are signed in, and the agent receives a permanent link that keeps working in old conversations until you delete the file (on servers without permanent links, a link that works for 7 days). Signed-out or local-only sessions keep sending the file inside the message.
What you can attach
Any file: documents, images, video, audio, archives, code and files with any extension, including dotfiles such as.env.local. On Desktop and in a desktop browser you can also attach a whole folder: choose Add a folder in the + menu, or drag a folder onto the chat. Phones can’t pick folders, because iOS and Android browsers don’t offer it.
What you see before you send
- A file shows as soon as you pick or drop it. While it is being read on your device, its card says Reading…, and send waits until reading finishes. A large PDF or folder can take a few seconds.
- Desktop: each file is a card under the text box with what’s in it: page and line counts for PDFs, lines for text and code, rows and columns for CSV, files in a .zip or folder, a thumbnail for images, and a frame and length for videos. Other files show their size and extension. Cards wrap onto more rows, up to three, then scroll. Hover a card to remove it, including while it is still reading.
- Phone layout and the m.allternit.com app: the same files show as small previews above the text box: the image or video frame, or the first lines of a document.
- You can send attachments without typing anything.
- In the sent message, attachments show as file chips, not their contents. A file sent as a link opens from its chip.
How the agent gets them
- Documents and text (PDF, DOCX, CSV, JSON, ZIP, code and any file that turns out to be text) are read on your device, and their text is added to your message.
- Folders are read the same way: each text file’s contents are added under its path, and other files are listed by name. Hidden folders such as
.git, andnode_modules,dist,buildandtarget, are skipped when you drag a folder in. - Images go to the model as images, so it can see them. Photos larger than 2048 px on the long side are scaled down first, and an animated GIF is sent as it is. Up to 10 images go with one message.
- Video, audio and other files (and PDFs with no readable text) are uploaded to your Allternit Cloud storage, and the message carries a link with the file’s name, type and size, so the agent can open it. This needs you to be signed in. If you aren’t, the message isn’t sent and a notice says why.
Storage by plan
If a file is over your plan’s limits, the message is not sent and a notice says why. Nothing is cut off silently. If shared storage is temporarily full, uploads pause and you see the same kind of notice. See the Files API for the developer view.
