Choose Customize appearance from a project card’s options menu or palette button, or from the project’s settings. Library folders, Code Explorer folders, Design file folders, and node file-browser directories also have a palette button. The controls are shared by Desktop, the web workspace, and the phone/PWA.

Design an icon

  1. Pick a folder color. Enable Show documents inside to add the paper layer and choose its color.
  2. Choose an overlay: None, Symbol, Text / emoji, or an uploaded image. The symbol picker has searchable Symbols and Brands tabs, with 48 symbols and 71 brand marks. You can upload another brand’s logo yourself.
  3. Choose the overlay color for symbols or text. Uploaded images retain their colors.
  4. Drag the overlay in the preview, or use the horizontal position, vertical position, size, and rotation sliders. Center overlay restores its position, size, and rotation.
  5. Choose Save appearance. Cancel discards your draft. Reset to default removes the saved customization and restores the surface’s default icon.
The compact editor places the preview, image import and position sliders beside the color and searchable symbol controls on wider screens. Phones stack these groups with a scrolling body; Save and Cancel stay visible. The preview updates while editing. Your project or folder changes only after a successful save. A failed save keeps the editor open so you can retry.

Images and export

Choose a file, drag it onto the editor, or paste a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image under 5 MB and 40 megapixels. Allternit fits it into a transparent 256 × 256 PNG, strips its metadata, and limits the saved image size. SVG uploads and remote image URLs are not accepted. Download PNG exports a transparent 512 × 512 icon. Copy image puts it on the clipboard where supported; use the download if your browser does not support image clipboard writes. Exporting a draft does not save it to the project.

Persistence and scope

Custom appearance is a personal preference stored under your authenticated account on the connected runtime. Devices connected to the same runtime and account load the same recipe; switching runtimes selects that runtime’s preferences. Views refresh when reopened or when the app regains focus. A project icon is separate from each folder’s icon. Folder recipes are keyed by their directory path or Library thread id; renaming or moving a directory gives it a different key. Existing default icon and color choices remain the fallback. Resetting execution settings does not clear custom appearances. If the runtime lacks the appearance API, the editor reports that it needs an update. These changes customize Allternit’s interface. They do not change Finder or other operating-system folder icons, project files, instructions, models, or permissions. See project coordination for the rest of the project workflow.

Project banners

Every project home and Details view has a full-width header banner matching the bot page, with a large project icon, title, description and actions. Open Customize appearance in the header and use Project banner color to pick from the same 20 presets as bot banners or choose a custom color. The banner color is independent of the folder icon; Match folder restores the shared color. Rail appearance controls appear on hover or keyboard focus; touch screens keep them visible.

One project settings view

Project banner appearance and project settings open the same dialog. Appearance contains the icon, banner, image and positioning controls. Configuration contains coordinator instructions and, for projects using their own coordinator, model and permission controls. Configuration remains usable if appearance cannot load. Settings save as you change them; appearance changes save with Save appearance.
