Your bot can only text or call a number that has contacted it first or that agreed to hear from it. An invite is how someone says yes. You send a link; they choose how, or say no. It works the same on Allternit Desktop, on ai.allternit.com and on the m.allternit.com phone app.

Send an invite

  1. Open the bot’s phone and choose Contacts, then Invite someone. Or start a new text or call to a number the bot can’t reach yet and choose Send invite in the explainer, so a dead end becomes the next step.
  2. Enter their name and what it’s about. This is shown to them on the invite page.
  3. Choose Create invite. You get a link that works once and expires after 14 days.
  4. Choose Copy link to send it from your own phone, Share (where your device has a share sheet), or enter their number and choose Send to have the bot text it. If the bot isn’t allowed to text that number first, the phone tells you and you copy or share the link instead.
Pending invites are listed under Invites in Contacts, with Cancel while the link hasn’t been used.

What the other person sees

The page at allternit.com/i/<code> works without an account, on a phone or computer, in light or dark. It says who is asking, what it’s about, and that the bot is an AI assistant. They pick one of:
  • Use Allternit. They sign up with an email link and land in a chat with your bot. Calls and messages in the app are free. Nothing to download; they can add it to their home screen.
  • Just use my phone number. They enter their mobile number, tick the consent line and choose Text me a code. They type the 6-digit code to confirm. If the carrier can’t deliver the text, they get a call that reads the code.
  • No thanks. Nothing is recorded about them and the bot does not contact them.
Confirming the code is the consent record. Replying STOP later turns texts and calls off, and only their own START turns them on again.

Contacts

Contacts shows each person with how the bot can reach them (Allternit, Text, Call, Email), the consent on file and where an invite stands. Someone who joined through an invite shows Allternit: Message opens your direct thread and Call rings them in the app.

Calling and messaging in the app

Between you and someone who joined Allternit, messages and calls are free.
  • Message opens one direct thread that you and they both see; what either of you writes shows up for the other.
  • Call rings their Allternit app. They get a full-screen incoming call on a phone, or a notification and the floating phone on Desktop, with Answer and Decline. You can hang up before they answer.
  • If they turned on call and message notifications on a device, that device rings even when Allternit is closed. If their app isn’t open and they haven’t, the call doesn’t go through. The phone says “We’ll let them know you called” and a missed call appears in your thread, and in theirs the next time they open Allternit.
  • If they have turned on Let my bot answer, their bot picks up instead, even when they’re away.
Only people who joined through your invite can be reached this way. Ringing the same person more than five times in ten minutes is paused for a while. Developers: see Phone invites and In-app messages and calls.
