By default a call only rings while Allternit is open. Turn on notifications on a device and it rings and notifies even when the app is closed. It works the same on Allternit Desktop, on ai.allternit.com and on the m.allternit.com phone app.

Turn it on

  1. Open your bot’s phone and choose Settings.
  2. Under Notifications, choose Turn on notifications.
  3. Your browser or phone asks for permission. Choose Allow. Allternit never asks on its own when it loads.
Each device is separate, so turn it on for each one you want to ring. Turn off notifications in the same place stops it for that device, and signing out does too.

What you get

  • Incoming call. “Incoming call from Sam”, with a tap to answer. Tapping opens Allternit on the call with Answer and Decline.
  • Missed call. If you don’t pick up, or the caller hangs up first, the notification becomes “Missed call from Sam” and opens the conversation.
  • Messages. In a browser or on your phone: a new message in a direct thread, and a note when a message reaches your bot through Slack, Telegram, text or another channel. You get at most one per conversation every 20 seconds, so a busy thread doesn’t flood you.
Approvals, threads that need you, sign-in reminders and usage alerts notify you too. See Notifications for the full list and to turn each kind on or off. While Allternit is open and in front of you, it doesn’t show a second notification. Incoming calls play a ring sound while Allternit is open. Turn it off under Settings, Notifications, Incoming calls. On iPhone, add m.allternit.com to your home screen first; iOS only allows notifications for apps added that way.

On Desktop

Allternit Desktop can’t be rung once you’ve quit it. While it’s running, even with its window hidden or minimised, an incoming call rings and shows a system notification when Allternit isn’t the window in front. The same goes for a new message from a channel (Slack, Telegram, text, email and so on), a missed call, and anything waiting for your approval, such as an email held before it sends. Notifications collapse per conversation (“3 new messages”), and nothing shows for the conversation you have open in the bot phone. Switch this off with Messages and missed calls in the bot phone’s Notifications card. The bot phone’s Notifications card has Allow system notifications if your computer hasn’t allowed them yet. To be rung when Desktop is closed, turn notifications on from your phone or from ai.allternit.com in a browser. If the permission is blocked, the setting says so and shows how to change it in your browser or system settings. For developers, see Web Push.
