What a dashboard is
A dashboard is an artifact made of tiles: a number (KPI), a line, area or bar chart, or a table. Every tile reads live data from one of your connected apps, such as a billing tool, a CRM or a data warehouse. It is not a snapshot: the data is fetched when you open the dashboard and again on a timer. Dashboards are on every plan, including Free. Organization admins can turn them off for their org.Make one
Ask in any chat (“build a dashboard of weekly revenue and open deals”), pick Dashboards in the Output menu under the message box, or type/dashboard.
Allternit chooses tiles from the apps you have connected, writes the queries
and opens the dashboard in its own window.
Change it by chatting: “add a region filter”, “switch the trend to weekly”,
“make the table show only open deals”. Each change is a new version, so you can
go back from the clock menu.
If you haven’t connected any apps yet, Allternit says so instead of inventing
numbers. Connect one under Connectors first.

- Click any number to see the query behind it: the app, the tool, its arguments, or the SQL for a warehouse. The code button on each tile does the same for charts and tables.
- Updated N min ago under each tile says how fresh it is.
- Filters at the top (a region, a date, a number) re-run the tiles that use them.
- Refresh re-queries every tile now. A dashboard also refreshes when you open it, on its own interval if it has one, and when you come back to the tab.
- The last values you saw appear straight away while the new ones load, so the page is never blank on a slow connection.
- Download → PDF opens your system print window; choose Save as PDF.
- Download → PNG image saves a picture of the dashboard as it is on screen: the title, every tile and an “Updated” time, at twice the screen resolution on a white background. Filters and buttons are left out. It waits for the charts to finish loading first, and works the same on the phone layout and the app, from the full-screen view’s Download menu (the arrow next to Copy).
It runs as you
A dashboard never uses its author’s accounts. It calls the apps you have connected, with your permissions, so two people can open the same shared dashboard and see different numbers if their access differs.- First open. Before anything loads, the dashboard lists the apps and tools it will call and asks you to allow them. It can only read: a tool that changes data is refused. If it later needs a new tool, it asks again.
- Your choice follows your account. Allowing a dashboard is saved to your account, so you aren’t asked again on another computer or on your phone. Untick a tool in the approval to leave it off; its tile says you turned it off and has a Turn on button. Choose Not now to keep live data off; a bar at the top lets you review it later.
- Signed out. Someone opening a shared dashboard without signing in sees no live data. Each tile says “Sign in to load live data.” If your organization has turned connectors off, the tiles say that instead.
- No access. If you haven’t connected an app a tile needs, that tile shows an error such as “You don’t have access to stripe. Connect it under Connectors to see this chart.” The other tiles are unaffected.
- Always ask. If you set an app to Always ask, you are asked before each query, as everywhere else.
SELECT, WITH, SHOW or DESCRIBE statement is run.
Edit by hand
Owners and editors see Edit at the top of the dashboard. In edit mode each tile lets you:- Rename it (click the title).
- Reorder it: drag the handle, or use the earlier and later buttons.
- Resize it: choose a width (quarter to full) and a height.
- Remove it.
Phone and the m.allternit.com app
On a phone the same dashboard opens full screen with the tiles stacked in one column, in reading order (top to bottom, left to right). You can read it, use filters, refresh, and make the same edits. Sharing settings are changed on Desktop or the web.Data warehouses
Connect your warehouse once under Connectors and Dashboards can query it.
These are the vendors’ own servers; Allternit doesn’t run them. What a
dashboard can read is decided by the roles and permissions you have in the
warehouse.
Sharing
A dashboard follows the usual sharing rules. Because it uses your connectors, Anyone with the link is not available for it: people open it signed in, and it runs with their own connections. Your org admin can turn Dashboards off for the org.For developers
- The body is JSON,
application/vnd.allternit.dashboard+json. Its schema, parser and the rest of the contract are in Dashboard body. - Client code:
allternit-ai/src/lib/artifacts/dashboard/(schema, data extraction, filters and SQL guard, layout edits, runtime, the model manual) andsrc/components/artifacts/dashboard/(view, editor, tiles). - Queries go through the same MCP Apps bridge as interactive answers
(
createCardToolClientinsrc/lib/openui/card-tools.ts), so connector permission modes apply. First-use approval is stored on the account as the page-runtimeconnectorsconsent (/api/v2/artifact-runtime/{id}/consents; tools switched off go indenied_tools). The client reads it fromcreateRuntimeApi().context()when the dashboard opens.localStorageholds only an instant first-paint copy that the account’s answer overrides. The server lets dashboards use theconnectorscapability only (not storage or AI). - PNG export is
src/components/artifacts/dashboard/png.ts, which captures the rendered grid withmodern-screenshot. - The model gets the dashboard manual only when Dashboards is enabled for the
user (
dashboardInstructionsinsrc/lib/openui/answer-instructions.ts).
